Mielziner, Jo (1901-1976), American stage designer, born in Paris,
and educated at the Art Students League in New York City and the Academy
of Fine Arts in Philadelphia. During his long career, Mielziner designed
more than 250 productions for the Broadway and London stages, including
The Guardsman (1924), Winterset (1935), The Glass Menagerie (1945),
A Streetcar Named Desire (1947), Mister Roberts (1948), Death of a Salesman
(1949), South Pacific (1949), Guys and Dolls (1950), and Gypsy (1959).
He also designed for the opera and ballet stages. Mielziner's sets were
invariably appropriate to the production, combining stylish realism
with dramatic symbolism, in forms that were practicable onstage. With
the Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen he designed the Vivian
Beaumont Theater in New York City's Lincoln Center. Many of his designs
are reproduced in his book Designing for the Theatre (1965).
